He was the only son of Joseph and Reita (Harrison) Zanardi. He was born in Geneva and lived most of his life in St. Charles. He was a member of St. Charles class of 1959, and is remembered for his exploits on the football field as well as other sports.
He graduated from Aurora College (now Aurora University) and then enlisted with the Armed Forces as an officer in 1965. He was a Second Lieutenant in Vietnam and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, Combat Infantry’s Badge, and The Purple Heart.
He returned from Vietnam in 1968 and married Marlene Hardt in December 1968. He and Marlene fathered Heather in 1971 and Joanna in 1975.
Over the years he worked for Sears, State Farm as a claims adjustor, at DuKane as the Ultrasonic Welding district sales manager, and then in sales positions for several other companies.
In later years he was an active member of online veterans groups, and enjoyed riding his bicycle around the neighborhood. He remained in his home in St. Charles after his wife of 48 years passed away on October 31, 2015.
He is survived by daughters Heather (Norman) Pink of Aurora, and Joanna Janecek of St.Charles, beloved grandchildren Caden and Dante Pink of Aurora, and Miles and McCoy Janecek of St.Charles.
