Elda M. Cucich
 August 27, 1919 - January 17, 2020 Elda M. Cucich, of Batavia, joined her beloved Nerino in the arms of our heavenly Father on January 17, 2020 after a brief illness. Elda was born in Padua, Italy on August 27, 1919 to Giovanni and Adele (nee Zoccarato) Rigato. Born into a world without commercial airplanes, radio or television, she survived Mussolini, fascism and World War II to follow her late husband Nerino on an ocean voyage to America where they lived together from 1950 until his passing in 1986. Although initially not exactly enamored of the idea of leaving family and her beloved Italy to move to a country where she couldn’t speak the language and knew no one, her devotion to Nerino and courage sustained her from their arrival in the coal town of Johnston City, Illinois until they moved to Batavia in 1951 to start their family. During their 36 years of marriage until Nerino’s death in August 1986, they sacrificed and succeeded together, embodying and living the American Dream. Her grieving family will miss her gentle smile but they take solace in the fact that, “gwell,” she and Nerino now stroll the cobblestone streets of Padua’s Piazza Ragione, arm in arm, in an eternal passegiata. Ciao, mommy and nonna, ti vogliamo bene. She leaves surviving two daughters, Sue (Rory) Weiler and Liz (John) Marszalek; five grandchildren, Timothy (Meghan) Weiler, Peter (Ryann) Marszalek, Melissa (John) Morgan, Nina (Jeremy) Roberg, Kyra Marszalek and seven great-grandchildren, Lincoln Morgan, Carter Roberg, Tyler Morgan, Eleanor Weiler, Claire Weiler, Amelia Weiler and Legion Marszalek. In addition she leaves a sister, Ines Dono of Padova, Italy. Visitation will be held at Moss Family Funeral Home 209 S. Batavia Ave. in Batavia on Monday January 20, 2020 from 5:00 – 8:00 PM. Funeral mass will be celebrated at Holy Cross Catholic Church, 2300 Main St., Batavia, IL on Tuesday January 21, 2020, at 10:30 AM. Interment will be held as Resurrection Cemetery in Geneva.
