Glen Jervis Anderson

Glen Jervis Anderson March 16, 1934 - May 12, 2021

Known to many as “Glen with one N,” the infinitely curious, thoroughly decent, eternally outgoing Batavia man has on this, his 87th trip around the sun, gone on.

Born to Ruth and Glenn Anderson of Batavia, Glen grew up with his two younger Brothers Gordon and Larry in a Christian home of solid moral and civic value. Glen was in the third generation of Batavia-born Andersons following his great grand father August Anderson. August and his wife Anna immigrated to the U.S. from Sweden circa 1885.

His youth was no barrier to his insatiable curiosity of current technological developments. An early example of this was during the war years Glen scraped together $7 to buy one of the latest advancements, a ball point pen. As a result he was the first student at the Louise White School to own one! In those days Batavia housed the hydro-electric generating station for the electric Chicago rail system. In his teens, Glen would sneak in the station just to get a peek at the massive generators. Shortly thereafter, he’d be back at the house dropping the transmission out of a model A Ford and then down to the basement to “borrow” the motor out his mother’s washing machine. His fascination with the mechanical and technological world continued throughout his life. He also had a keen interest in the natural world, vegetable gardening, chemistry, wine making, natural medicine and animals. He loved music too.  On Saturday’s while tackling his “to do” list for house maintenance he would blast symphonic music at high decibels on his state of the art HI-FI, with perhaps the original surround sound a’la Glen. He kept informed and current by being an avid reader and was a natural do-it-yourselfer.

He served as an enlisted electrician’s mate in the U.S. Navy from 1954-’58. He trained at the Great Lakes Naval Academy and served aboard the aircraft carriers U.S.S. Coral Sea and Midway. After his honorable discharge, he briefly drove trucks and heavy equipment and worked at Boeing Aircraft in Washington.  After more electronics training he wound up in sales. He worked with his brother Gordon Anderson at the Kane County Ins. Agency. He also sold photo-electric equipment and later static elimination products. For Glen, work was a necessity rather than a passion.

It was near the end of his Naval service that Glen met Deanna Keckler, his future wife of 63 years. They met through the Brethren Church of San Francisco. After six months of courtship they were married in November of 1958. Settling in Batavia, their family life turned out to be in “3D”. This was because they gave birth to the 3 D.’s ….. David, Daniel and Donna. They provided a loving home and good foundation for the 3 D’s, allowing them to find their individual ways. After retirement Glen and Deanna had a taste of rural living. They spent a number of years near Amboy Illinois where his gardening Genie was “out of the bottle” maintaining and harvesting a 50’x 50’ vegetable garden. They came full circle by again taking up residence in Batavia. Since 2015 they have been on S. Jackson St. in Batavia. Glen took advantage of the library, met with “old” friends at the Panera for coffee and conversation and dabbled in the Batavia Historical Society. Glen fought off illness as long as he could. He spent his final month at home with hospice service and in the comfort and inexhaustible care of his wife Deanna. He truly loved life and family.

He is survived by his wife Deanna Anderson of Batavia, his brother Larry Anderson(Debby) of Ohio and his sons David(Debbie) of Lisle and Dan(Irene) of Batavia, his daughter Donna(Mark) Daszkiewicz of Amboy, grandchildren Benjamin Daszkiewicz of Michigan, Julia Daszkiewicz of Texas, Angela Daszkiewicz of Amboy, Lindsey Anderson (DeCraene) of Texas, Shelby Anderson (Lisle), August Anderson of Batavia, Ocean Anderson of Boston.

There will be a memorial for Glen, date and location to be announced.

The Anderson family would like to thank The Moss Funeral Home for their fine services and publication of this obituary.
