January 29, 1914 - November 6, 2017
Thelma Hanley, nee Wilhemy, died Monday, November 6, 2017, in Geneva, Il. Born January 29, 1914, in Marlboro, Massachusetts, she resided over the past 80 years in Wilmette, Winnetka, Northfield, Glenview, and Geneva, Il. Thelma was preceded in death by Francis Hanley, her husband of 57 years. She is survived by her two daughters: Judith Hanley Johnson (Hal) and Marilyn Hanley Bald (David); her six grandchildren: Kristin Johnson Osborne (Michael), Karin Johnson Keane (Sean), Katie Johnson Svigel (Brian), Stephanie Hanley Bald (Jesse Eaves), David M. Bald (Errin), and Rebecca A. Bald (Jeff Niemiec); and her thirteen great-grandchildren.
Thelma earned her B.A. in French from Beaver College and her M.A. in French from Bryn Mawr College. During her junior year, she lived in Paris and studied at the Sorbonne. For ten years, she was a master teacher of French at New Trier High School in Winnetka.
Travel was one of Thelma’s many passions: she made 25 (at least!) trips to continental Europe and the British Isles. She loved to cook, to read, to socialize, to play bridge; she loved the arts: music, theatre, and painting-especially the Impressionists. She loved the Chicago Cubs. She loved life.
Above all, Thelma loved her family. She was the family matriarch, the glue that held her large family together. She will be deeply missed and her memory forever treasured.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 2, 2017 at 10 a.m. at Calvary Episcopal Church, 222 S. Batavia Ave., Batavia, Il. 60510. In lieu of flowers, please send a contribution to either the American Cancer Society or the American Heart Association.Send Flowers View / Sign Guestbook
