OBITUARY James E. Martin, age 83, of St. Charles passed away March 29, 2017. He was born September 28, 1933 to James and Margaret Martin in Aurora, Illinois.
He exhibited leadership qualities at an early age, earned the rank of Eagle Scout in St. Charles Troop 13, and remained a lifelong supporter of Scouting. Jim served his country in the Navy from 1954 to 1956. He retired in 2001 as president and owner of Star Sales Ltd.
Since he first attended a City Council meeting in 1971, Jim never missed a Council Meeting until his retirement as Alderman in 2015. He was an active citizen of the city of St. Charles, becoming involved in local politics and community boards. Prior to becoming alderman he served on the St. Charles Zoning Board for five years. He served as Alderman from 1979 to 2015. He was a 43 year member of the St. Charles Rotary Club, serving as president, long time secretary/treasurer, and was recognized as Outstanding Rotarian in 1987. He was also instrumental in establishing the St. Charles Breakfast Rotary Club. He co-chaired the drive to form the 708 Mental Health Commission, and served as its first president. He spearheaded the formation of The Greater St. Charles Convention and Visitors Bureau and served 25 years as its president. He was a part of the original group who formed the Downtown St. Charles Partnership, and served over 20 years on its board. Jim was also a part of the team who created the Greater St. Charles Education Foundation, and served as its charter Secretary. He was a member of the board of the St. Charles Chamber of Commerce and served as President in 1989. The Chamber honored Jim as the Recipient of the Charlemagne Award in 2000. In that same year Jim was awarded the St. Charles High School Distinguished Alumni Award.
He is survived by his loving wife Rita “nee Davis;” three sons, Steven (Cynthia) Martin of St. Charles, IL, Daniel Martin, and Philip (Elizabeth) Martin of St. Charles; eight grandchildren, Cassandra (Jake), Amber, Brittany, Tyler, Thomas, Kevin, Rachel, and Ryan; five great grandchildren, Burgundy, Evelyn, Seamus, James, and Edith; his mother Margaret Betts of Houston, TX; and three brothers, Carlyle “Bud” Meredith of Houston, TX, Kenneth Martin of Mesa, AZ, and Terrence “Terry” Martin of Cossayuna, NY and Fort Pierce, FL; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father James; and brothers, Dick Meredith, and Clark Martin.

Visitation will be 4-8:00 P.M. Tuesday, April 4, 2017 at Yurs Funeral Home, 405 E. Main Street, St. Charles, IL 60174. Funeral Services will be 10:00 A.M. Wednesday, April 5, 2017, at Yurs Funeral Home. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Lazarus House, 214 Walnut Street, St. Charles, IL 60174.
