Mary E. Pope (nee Hopkins), 88, of Batavia, peacefully passed away on July 3, 2021, surrounded by her loving family, at the Holmstad in Batavia, Illinois. Mary was born on September 23, 1932, in Norwalk, Ohio, the daughter of Clarence and Kathryn (nee Raudabaugh) Hopkins. She married her high school and college sweetheart Ernie Pope on July 10, 1954 in Lakewood, Ohio. Mary earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Home Economics from Kent State University. Mary and Ernie loved travel, art, and spending time with family and friends. They moved many times and then settled in Wisconsin. While living in Wisconsin, Mary obtained her Master’s Degree in Library Science and worked as a librarian in several small towns. She was a member of Unitarian Universalist churches in Wisconsin and Illinois. After Ernie passed away, Mary moved to Illinois to be closer to her children and grandchildren. The most important aspect of her life was family. She instilled wonderful qualities in her children and grandchildren, leaving a legacy that lives on in them. Mary will be remembered for her smile, her kindness, her friendship, and her deep love of animals. Mary is survived by her children, Sarah (Robert) Holcombe, Amy (Kerry) Hong and Peter (Dawn) Pope; four grandchildren, Christopher and Natalie Hong, and Erin and Emily Pope. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Ernie and son Stephen, and her siblings Robert and Anne.
