Susan Otto Spicer, age 79 of Batavia, IL (formerly of Pelham Manor, NY, and Dover, VT) passed away on April 14, 2020 at Delnor Hospital in Geneva, IL in the presence of her loving son. Her passing was the result of complications from various health conditions. Susan was born on May 6, 1940 to Robert H. and Lydia Maguire Otto in New York City. She grew up in Pelham Manor, NY with her parents and her older sister, Helen Otto Greely. She graduated from Skidmore College’s nursing program, initially serving in public nursing in Manhattan. She was widowed after the death of her husband Albert Doty Spicer, Jr. of Westerly, RI. She dedicated herself to raising their only child Albert and worked for 30 years as an elementary school nurse in the Pelham, NY school district. Nurse Spicer was known by students and their families as a dependable and thoughtful caregiver and advocate. Whether it was for her students or her beloved family, friends, or pets, “Susie” dedicated her life to caring for others. She will be remembered for her generosity and thoughtfulness. In her early years, she enjoyed gourmet cooking and entertaining, as well as tennis and skiing. She loved contributing to holiday celebrations and festive decorating, and she cherished the nostalgia of times past, memorialized by her collections of antiques and family photos. Susie was happiest when surrounded by the peaceful beauty of nature and wildlife at her home in Vermont. She enjoyed the company of her dogs and loved watching the birds (hummingbirds especially), ducks, and even the occasional black bears that “visited” her there. For the last 15 years, Susie spent half of each year in Batavia, IL to be near her son and his family. As “Nana,” she would dote on her two grandchildren and enjoy times spent baking together and playing games. Susie is survived by her partner Charles Beebe of Mystic, CT, son Albert D. (Laura) Spicer III, sister Helen (James) Greely, sister-in-law Judy (John) Knutson, grandchildren Jonathan and Charlotte, and the families of her 6 nieces and nephews. A private family burial ceremony will be held in Rhode Island at a future date. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to her favorite charity, the National Wildlife Federation. https://www.nwf.org/ Arrangements entrusted to Moss Family Funeral Home – St. Charles, IL, 630-584-2000 or |
