Susan Lou Smith

Susan Lou Smith, 85, of Batavia passed away Tuesday, February 2, 2021 in Florida.  She was born January 29, 1936 in Geneva, IL the daughter of Harold and Ruth (Hassler) Foland.

Susan was a graduate of the Batavia High School class of 1945.  She was honored by her class as the Homecoming Queen and served as the class secretary.  Susan met her husband Ronald Smith at the Batavia Quarry and was united in marriage June 11, 1955.  Susan’s parents owned and operated the Batavia Bowl which naturally made Susan a great bowler.  Family and sports were a big part of her life.   She supported her husband though his many years and softball.  Although she loved all sports hockey became her sport of choice.  She supported the Chicago Freeze Hockey team by giving players jobs and mentoring them to become fine young men.  She was affectionately known by the Hockey players as “Grambo” for her tough love, her knowledge, and her enthusiasm to make them better.    

She is survived by her three children, Karie (James) Reach, Scott (Carla) Smith and Steve Smith; eight grandchildren, Jenae Reach, Shanna Cora, Dustin Reach, Kassie Reach, Brandon Smith, Mike Katzenbach, Kim Katzenbach, and Kristy Nolan; thirteen great-grandchildren, and two sisters, Linda (Kurt) Maves and Marlo (Bill) McGhie; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She is preceded in death by her husband Ronald G. Smith, and a brother Richard “Dick” Foland.    

Visitation will be held 4:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. Monday, February 15, 2021 at Moss Family Funeral Home, 209 South Batavia Ave. Batavia, IL. 

Due to COVID-19 occupancy mandates the funeral services will be held private Moss Family Funeral Home.  Interment will be held in West Batavia Cemetery.
