Anders J. Malm Obituary Anders J. Malm, age 31, passed away Saturday, May 9, 2026, at Delnor Hospital in Geneva.
He was born December 22, 1994, in Hinsdale, the son of John and Sara (Cunningham) Malm, of Batavia.
Anders was a sweet, sensitive, thoughtful, and deeply intuitive young man whose gentle spirit touched the lives of those who knew and loved him. He viewed the world with creativity, curiosity, humor, and compassion, and found meaning in time spent with his family. Though reserved at times, Anders possessed a sharp wit, bluntness and a unique perspective that made him unforgettable to his family and friends.
Anders loved music from the time he was young. He first played piano as a child before finding his place in percussion, later performing in the band at Batavia High School and in a competitive percussion group. He loved movies and musical scores, especially those of the Pixar animation films, which remained deeply meaningful to him throughout his life. His favorite composer was Hans Zimmer. Anders enjoyed comedy movies, particularly those by Will Ferrell, and loved joking with his family about favorite movie scenes and lines. Anders had a quick, dry sense of humor that those close to him will never forget. Anders remained a devoted fan of SpongeBob, season one.
Anders loved animals, especially his cats, Jack and Parker, and often talked about someday owning a caracal cat. After snorkeling in Hawaii as a boy, he became fascinated with tropical fish and spent years enjoying his own saltwater aquarium. Anders was creative in so many ways — he loved painting, drawing, building with LEGOs, model trains, and admired the creativity and craftsmanship of sandcastles. Many of his paintings and artwork still hang throughout his parents’ home and are treasured by his family. Anders also had a deep interest in history, especially World War II, and spent countless hours reading and learning about it.
Some of Anders’ happiest memories were made at the family cottage in northern Michigan. He loved fishing, driving go-karts and ATVs, making s’mores around the fire, and tubing behind the boat with his brothers and neighbors. More than anything, Anders loved spending time with his brothers, whether they were playing video games, board games, or simply being together. Those moments meant the world to him, and they will remain some of the memories his family cherishes most.
Anders struggled for much of his life with mental illness, including anxiety and depression, which at times manifested in psychosis and made it difficult for him to navigate the world around him. Through those years, his family remained his constant anchor, staying closely connected to him and loving him through every hardship. Those who knew Anders best recognized him as a sweet and caring person who often carried burdens that others could not fully see. Anders was deeply loved by his family, who cherished his kindness, humor, creativity, and the unique way he saw the world.
Anders’ profound faith in God helped sustain him through the many storms he faced throughout his life. He found comfort in nature, music, art, humor, and in his family, who loved him unconditionally. His young life was cut far too short, and he will be deeply missed by all who loved him and by those whose lives were brighter because he was part of them. Anders struggled for so long to quiet his mind, and his family takes comfort in knowing that the gentle and sensitive soul that shaped his life is now at peace in God’s loving embrace.
He is survived by his parents; his three younger brothers, Gunnar (Fiancée Riley Hunzeker) of New York, Stefan (Katherine Maxwell) of Batavia and Erik (Tim Rindfleisch) of Boston; paternal grandfather, Joseph Malm, of Naperville; maternal grandmother, Ruth Cunningham, of Bloomington; his Godparents, Katherine Mueller, of Bloomington, and Jeffery Malm, of Naperville; and many dear aunts, uncles and cousins.
Anders was preceded in death by his fraternal grandmother, Maren Malm, of Naperville, and maternal grandfather, William Cunningham, of Bloomington.
