March 15, 1949 - October 24, 2021

Sam DiMaio, 72, died Sunday, October 24th surrounded by his loving family.  He was born on March 15, 1949 in Gratteri, Italy. Survivors include wife, Nancy DiMaio; daughters Christine (David) Nevogt, Katherine (James) Threatte; grandsons Sam & Ethan Nevogt and Arthur Threatte; brother, Jack DiMaio; sisters, Giovanna Rizzi & Lorenza Culotta; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Joseph DiMaio; mother, Josephine DiMaio and sister, Maria Scelsi. Sam was diagnosed with esophageal junction cancer in May of 2021 and fought a courageous battle having extensive surgery to treat the cancer. In December of 1958, Sam docked on the shores of America and made his way to the Chicagoland area with his family.  He grew up in Melrose Park and attended Proviso East High School. After high school, Sam went to flight school. His training to become a commercial pilot was interrupted when his country called, and he served 3 years in the US Army. After being honorably discharged, Sam went to work for West TransCo and was the sharpest dressed salesman in the business.  He was a hard worker and opened JBS Logistics with his dear friend and business partner Alec Gizzi in 1986.  Most days you could find Sam on the forklift moving pallets ensuring the warehouse was perfectly organized. Sam was a mentor to many and a friend to all.  His desire to see others succeed was only matched by his compassion for all that worked for him.  He retired in 2016 and was able to spend time between homes in St Charles, IL & Naples, FL with his family and friends. “Sammy”, as many of his friends called him, was a generous and loyal friend. He enjoyed countless rounds of golf around the country and was a member at Royal Fox and The Rookery/Hammock Bay. He enjoyed lunches with his pizons (buddies) at DeMarco’s and the occasional card game.  Sundays were typically spent watching golf or football and having dinner with his family. Sam was a devoted husband, father and Nonno (grandfather), a true family man.  His greatest accomplishment in life was providing for his family, and provide he did.  He raised two smart, independent woman and loved his wife of 46 years with all his heart.  Though, the “true loves of his life”, as he called them, were his three grandsons. While on earth, Sam touched so many people and time will never fade those memories. He was called home to our Heavenly Father and now he rests in peace. Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 A.M., Thursday, October 28th at Saint John Neumann Church, 2900 E Main St. St. Charles, IL 60174. Entombment will be at Queen of Heaven Catholic Cemetery & Mausoleums.  Friends and family will gather for visitation from 4:00-8:00 P.M. Wednesday, October 27th at Yurs Funeral Home of St. Charles, 405 East Main Street (Corner of Rt. 64 & Rt. 25).Guest BookShareEmailPrint
