Stephen Schmidt

Stephen Schmidt April 24, 1960 - October 8, 2022

Stephen “Steve” Schmidt, age 62, of Batavia, Illinois  passed away on Saturday, October 8, 2022. He left without being able to say goodbye to so many.  He leaves us all with so many wonderful memories to cherish until we meet again.

 He was born in Berwyn, Illinois to parents Hildegarde and Stephen Schmidt.  He grew up in Maywood and attended Northwestern University and graduated from the University of Miami jazz program.  He went on to earn a Master’s Degree in Educational Technology and a Master’s degree in Educational Administration.

 Steve was the band director at Mooseheart Schools in Mooseheart, Illinois for well over thirty years.  He loved his students, colleagues and being part of the Mooseheart family.  Steve met Arlene, his wife, at Mooseheart schools when she was a counselor there.  Steve and Arlene went on to build their family of four children and five grandchildren.

 Steve is survived by his loving wife, Arlene.  He is survived by his loving children, Maggie (Matt) Karns of Batavia, Illinois;  Chad Matthews of Chicago, Illinois;  Yasmine Schmidt of Batavia, Illinois; and Christopher Schmidt of Denver, Colorado.  Steve is also survived by his precious grandchildren, Owen Karns, Cameron Karns, Jordynn Cox, Wynnter Cox and Skylar Gibson.  Steve is survived by his mother, Hildegarde Schmidt;  his sisters, Beth Schmidt (Doug Swartz); Deb Schmidt Rogers (Chris Rogers);  Ruth Schmidt (Kevin Zamzow). He is survived by a sister-in-law,Maureen (Mike) Bowers. Steve is also survived by six nephews and two nieces.

 Steve was preceded in death by his father, Stephen A. Schmidt; his niece, Meghan Bowers; and his sister-in-law, Peggy (Romi) Nangia.

 Steve touched the lives of many people and was incredibly loved as a husband, father, “Pops” to his grandchildren, son, brother, brother-in-law, uncle, teacher, friend and neighbor.  He will be so deeply missed.

 Visitation will be from 4:00 to 8:00pm on Friday, October 14, 2022 at Moss Funeral Home, 209 S. Batavia Avenue, Batavia, Illinois.

 A funeral service will take place on Saturday, October 15, 2022 at 10:30am at Moss Funeral Home.

Following the service, friends and family are invited to Pal Joey's in Batavia, IL to gather and share memories.
