Gail L. Gaboda Obituary Gail Lynnette Gaboda, 60, of Geneva, Illinois, passed away on Saturday, July 18. Gail was a devout Catholic whose faith was a deeply important and enduring part of her life. It shaped her values, guided the way she treated others and provided her with strength and comfort throughout the years. She carried her faith with her in both joyful times and difficult ones. It remained a constant source of hope, peace and meaning in her life.Gail was preceded in death by her mother, Lenore McGill. She is survived by her aunt, Lynnette McGill; her sister, Ginette Qualey, and brother-in-law, Bob Qualey; her niece, Madelyn Qualey; and her nephew, Matthew Qualey. Gail loved Madelyn and Matthew with all her heart. She took great pride in their lives, celebrated their accomplishments and made it a priority to be present for the moments that mattered most. Gail also shared a deeply meaningful relationship with her aunt and godmother, Lynnette, who held a very special place in her heart. Their bond extended far beyond that of an aunt and niece; Lynnette was a constant source of love, guidance and support, Gail shared an especially close bond with her sister, Ginette. Born on the same day, they always considered their shared birthday a special connection between them. Each year, they celebrated by taking a trip together—a time they both treasured. Anyone who knew Gail also knew how much she loved her cats, Roxie and Mr. Handsome. They were not simply pets; they were part of her family, her companions and an important part of her everyday life. The place she held in the lives of her family cannot be replaced, and she will be missed more than words can adequately express. Gail treasured her large extended family of aunts, uncles, and cousins and took great joy in planning their annual family reunion. Bringing everyone together meant so much to her, and the reunion became a cherished tradition that reflected how deeply she valued family and connection. Gail maintained close friendships throughout every chapter of her life—from high school and college to the many places she worked. She especially treasured the annual trip with her high school friends, a tradition she looked forward to each year. Gail was a gifted creative writer, journalist, editor, and graphic designer, as well as an avid reader. She graduated from Illinois Wesleyan University with degrees in English and journalism and later earned a master’s degree in professional writing from Illinois State University. Books were a constant and treasured presence throughout Gail’s life. She shared her love of reading with her mother, Lenore, whom she credited with nurturing that passion from an early age. Over the years, she built an extensive personal library that reflected her deep appreciation for the written word. Creativity was an essential part of who Gail was. She loved crafting a good story and wrote hundreds of captivating articles and stories throughout her career. She approached language thoughtfully, always searching for the words that would express exactly what she meant. Her eye for detail and talent for combining words, images, and design allowed her to tell stories both visually and through the written word. Gail spent many years working at the Daily Herald and built a career that also included journalism, publishing, editing, project management, and content development. Most recently, she served as a creative communications specialist at the Batavia Park District, a job she truly loved. She cared deeply about her work and was especially grateful for the talented and supportive team with whom she worked. Gail moved to Geneva 20 years ago, and it quickly became much more than the place where she lived. Geneva became her home and her favorite place. She loved being part of the community and took a sincere interest in the people, events, and character that made it special. A devoted Shakespeare enthusiast, Gail jumped at the opportunity to volunteer with Geneva Shakespeare in the Park and later became the event’s chair. Each summer, she helped bring a free outdoor performance to the community that brought together  hundreds of people. Gail was immensely proud to help make the arts accessible to the community she loved. It is impossible to capture an entire life in a few paragraphs—and, as a writer, Gail undoubtedly would have had a few edits of her own. What can be said simply and truthfully is that Gail was deeply loved. Her family, friends, colleagues and the community she gave so much of herself to will feel her absence for years to come.
