Final Rest

Larry “Swede” James, age 75, of Elburn, passed away February 3, 2020, surrounded by the love and prayers of his family. He was born July 2, 1944 in Knoxville, IA, to proud parents, Charles and Dorothy (Lane) James. Swede, a nickname that was born from his extremely white-blond hair, lived Albia, IA, but the family moved to Elburn when he was three. He attended local schools, graduating from Kaneland High School. He was blessed with three children, Christopher, Kelly, and John. Later his blessings grew with the addition of grandchildren and great grandchildren. Swede spent some time behind the wheel of a truck, hauling freight for Advance Trucking, and was a great help on the O’Connell farm for many years. For the last ten years, Swede found work at Schmidt’s Towne Tap, cleaning the bar and otherwise making himself indispensable. If you really knew Larry, you knew him as “Swede”, getting his nickname from his white blond hair. He was unique and unforgettable and his stories were enjoyed by all. He was loved by all and never met a stranger. Swede was a hard worker who took pride in each and every job, teaching by example, and showing others what a strong work ethic really was. His tenure at Schmidt’s Towne Tap made him many friends throughout the community, but none closer than “Gus”, Kevin Schmidt’s chocolate lab. Gus waited at the door for Swede to come and clean the bar every morning, followed him the rest of the day, and still waits for him to this very day. In his last days, Swede loved to spend time at the O’Connell farm, sharing stories and reminiscing about the crazy days gone by. He will be missed by many and never forgotten. He is survived by two children: Kelly Anderson and John (Diane) Konen; two grandchildren: Colton James (Samantha) Anderson and Ashley D. (Mario) Konen; two great-grandchildren: Cayden James Anderson and Oliver Michael Anderson; four siblings: Deloris (Jim) O’Connell, Dixie (Richard) Schroder, JoAnn Creiger and Charlene (Vic) Wardlow; many nieces, nephews and a family of friends the world over. He is preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Dorothy James; one brother Paul James in infancy and a son Christopher James. A memorial visitation will be from 5-7 p.m., on Friday, February 7, 2020, at Conley Funeral Home, 116 W. Pierce St., Elburn, IL 60119. A celebration of his life will be planned for the Summer of 2020. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established in Swede’s name. Checks may be made to the “Larry James Memorial” and mailed in care of P.O. Box 66, Elburn, 60119. Tributes may also be forwarded to the same address, the Conley Funeral Home Facebook Page, or at www.conleycare.com.
